Sometimes when we are feeling pain between our shoulder blades it can be very hard to pinpoint where it is coming from or what caused the pain. In this situation, we only know one thing: the pain is debilitating. Not knowing where the pain comes from means not knowing how to fix it. In this article, we are going to discuss the 3 most common reasons you are experiencing pain between your shoulder blades.
Poor Posture
One of the most common issues for back pain, especially upper back in between the shoulder blades, is poor posture. Many of the positions we find ourselves in every day are detrimental to a healthy posture. It could be sleeping, sitting at a desk, sitting on a couch, or a number of other things. A poor posture is specifically bad for our bodies because it re-trains the postural muscles in our back and neck to form that incorrect posture.
This seems pretty bleak and like a never-ending cycle of chronic pain but it does not have to be. Just as easy as your body being trained to have a bad posture, it can be trained to have a good posture. We are always posting videos on how to train your body for a correct posture. Check this video out where we show an easy posture exercise you can do at home.
Chronic Inflammation and Scar Tissue Build Up
If you have ever experienced an acute injury and failed to properly treat it, or it was severe enough, chances are you have some sort of chronic inflammation and scar tissue build up. It could be that one time you pulled your back or rolled your ankle and it seems to be a “nagging” injury. This “nagging” you are feeling is the presence of chronic inflammation and what we call scar tissue.
One of the common symptoms of chronic inflammation and scar tissue besides pain is a limited range of motion. If there’s an area or body part that you feel like just hasn’t been the same since an injury or incident then you may have this. Your upper back between your shoulder blades is a prime spot for this.
Unfortunately, the treatment for chronic inflammation and scar tissue build-up is not as easy as following along with a youtube video and doing an exercise. Successful treatment requires a diagnosis and treatment from a musculoskeletal physician.
Possible Scoliosis
Another possible reason for pain between your shoulder blades is an underlying undiagnosed musculoskeletal disorder such as scoliosis. You would be surprised at how many patients have had back pain their entire lives to finally go to a musculoskeletal physician, get X-rays, and find out they have scoliosis.
Scoliosis, like most severe genetic musculoskeletal disorders, does not go away but it can be treated effectively to reduce the associated pain and discomfort. At Underwood Healthcare we treat patients with all musculoskeletal disorders including scoliosis. The severity of the disorder can differ and requires different treatment plans.
If you or someone you know is experiencing some type of pain between the shoulder blades it is important to contact your musculoskeletal physician for a proper medical examination and diagnosis.
